Content Map

How to Use the Content Map

The Monomyth Online framework looks at three specific aspects of the online learning environment – the PEOPLE within it, the PATHS that individuals follow, and the METHODS employed.  This interactive worksheet will guide you through one or all of these areas in mapping out your learning experience, whether its an individual module or an entire course curriculum.

Instructions: Answer the questions below to map your course content to the monomyth framework.  When you are finished, you can print your mapping, save it to edit later, and/or share it with others on this website.  If you need help with a particular section of the framework, click on the blue info icon to access a wizard that will guide you through that stage.

Content Map

Getting Started

First, give your course map a name. Then, in addition to the hero's path, select which pieces you'd like to define within your course content map.

People

Define your epic hero and/or the complimentary roles in your journey.

Instructions: Fill in the fields below to cast your epic, using as many or as few of the roles below as you’d like. Also, some roles may be filled by places and things as opposed to people. Be creative with your interpretation of your roles, and leave ones blank that you don’t feel you need. Need an example? Click on the PEOPLE tab in the Glossary on the right to read sample interpretations for each of the roles.

Hero

The hero is the driver of the narrative and leader of the story and accepts the call to action.

Wise Elder

The wise elder assists the hero in their journey (usually prior) and provides key knowledge integral to the hero’s success.

Path

Map out the learning content, either as a single module or multiple modules within a lesson plan.

Instructions: Answer the prompts below, considering how the learning content, assignments and intended learning outcomes might be woven into a narrative structure that establishes an epic hero completing a journey through the course content.

Once you’ve filled out the initial three pieces below, you can expand this out as much as you’d like! Hit the plus sign to create another row. You can make as many rows as you’d like to represent the entire path through the learning content. For instance, if you want to map out an 8 week course, you can fill in the quest, trials and inventory for each week in a series of 8 modules.

Module

Think about how success is mapped in this quest. What will your hero be able to do upon completion of the journey?
Describe the hero's actions. How will you know if your hero was successful? How will you measure their success?
What resources will your hero need? What will you give them so that they are successful in their actions?

Methods

Integrate effective practices and tools into the journey.

Instructions: Check off all boxes for practices you’d like to include in the design of your learning environment. Write brief notes under each checked item for how you’d like to incorporate that practice.

Finish

Enter your information below and then click Submit to save your Course Map. You will be sent a username and password that will allow you to print out your Course Map and/or continue to edit it as much as you'd like.
